Where I live

Sumedang is a town in West Java, Indonesia, approximately 46 km northeast of Bandung, capital city of West Java Province.

Sumedang have characteristics as a typical ancient city on the island of Java, there is a central square surrounded by the great mosque, jail house, and government offices. In the middle of the square there are buildings named Lingga, a memorial monument that was built in 1922. It was built by Prince Siching from Holland and it was dedicated to Prince Aria Soeriaatmadja for his services in developing Sumedang District. Up to present day Linga become a symbol of Sumedang regency and April 22 is celebrated as the anniversary Sumedang Regency.

Because Sumedang located between two major cities, which is Bandung and Cirebon, the city is often known as a haven for those who were to travel overland between Bandung and Cirebon.

Sumedang's museum, Prabu Geusan Ulun, houses a collection of traditional Sundanese weaponry, as well as some crown jewels and other finery. It is located on Geusan Ulun Road.

The city of Sumedang is famous for its tofu, Tahu Bungkeng, a local variety of deep fried tofu which was first made by a Chinese immigrant, Ong Kino.

Within the district surrounding the town lies Cadas Pangeran, a section of the trans-Java postal road constructed on the order of Dutch Governor, Willem Daendels, during the first quarter of 19th century. The section is famous due to difficulty during the construction, which requires blasting of a mountainside. Hence "cadas" which means mountain rock in Sundanese. The section is finished due to cooperation between the governor, regent Kusumadinata known as "Pangeran Kornel", and the people of Sumedang, although with considerable ill-feeling on the part of the regent and the people due to forced labor practice. A statue commemorating this event is erected on the section.

The town also houses the exiled Indonesian national heroine Cut Nyak Dhien from Aceh during her old age, after she was captured during the Aceh War at the beginning of 20th century. Her tomb is located not far from the town.

I live in Cimanggung, one of the three districts (with Jatinangor and Tanjungsari) located in the southwest corner of the regency adjacent to Bandung City and lie within the Bandung Metropolitan Area. They cover 112 km2 and had a combined population of 264,342 at the 2010 Census.

In August 2011, the project of Jatigede Dam in Cimanuk River has been initialized. The dam capacity is almost one billion cubic metre will be the Indonesian second biggest dam in capacity after Jatiluhur Dam.

An agreement to make a hydro power plant with capacity of 2x25 megawatts and an estimated cost $224.4 million has been signed in December 2011. The production will be incorporated to the Java-Bali 150KiloVolt transmission system in 2015.

Beside the historical background, Sumedang also has a lot of potential for tourism, especially nature and cultural tourism, with some exotic places.

In Citengah village area, South Sumedang district there are 18 waterfalls. Citengah agro tourism and waterfalls village can be reached from Sumedang Central Park to the east through Cipameungpeuk bridge. The unique waterfalls are Cigorobog waterfall with its 4 step waterfalls, 30 meters Cimecek waterfall and U-shape Ciparahu waterfall. The environment is well preserved with monkeys and wild pigs in the hill.
