Profile

Hola, my name is Ramiro,

Although born in New York City, my parents are Colombian, and since my father used to work for the UN, we were moved around Latin America, mostly Colombia, Chile and Mexico, where I was educated and reared. From a rather early age I showed a special gift for spelling, which I never knew what good it would do me. At around 15 I created a neighbourhood bulletin with some friends, which lasted almost 4 years, during which time — without being aware — I actually learned to write. And it was not until I was around 25, teaching English at the USIS institute in Colombia, when the dean of a local university asked me to translate an essay in psychology and was so happy with the result that I then decided to offer translation services for a living, and after living again (and working in translation and interpretation) in the US, I haven't stopped translating, interpreting and editing (in Spanish), even after I spent 6 years in Brasil studying and working.

One of the discoveries — and saving grace — along the way was the realization of how much I liked translating, not only for the sheer challenge of it, but also to help others who don't know the other language. Also, I feel I haven't stopped learning and, somehow, seen proof of it: when I look at a ten or five-year old translation, I notice things I would improve.

So, as a life project, not only do I care about every detail in a translation or editing, but also make sure I never default on a deadline.

Where I live

I am now living in Bogotá, Colombia, a 10-million inhabitant, flat city against the eastern mountain range, 2600 m (8,500 ft) above sea level, and 4.6 degrees above the Equator line with a 14C (58 F) degree average temperature, which makes it literally a cool city to live and move around in, especially by bicycle.

It being a 480-year old city, capital of the Vice Kingdom of Granada (that included what is today Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama), it sports a well-preserved old downtown (that still functions as such), full of magnificent old churches and old houses now turned museums.

Aside from the traditional visit to Monserrate mountain top by either funicular, cable car, or hiking, from where you can see the whole city and its surroundings, and the various museums depicting the history and costumes of the city, there is quite a diverse gastronomic, night-life and cultural offer, apart from the rides to the beautiful surrounding country side, to which I can direct you and even take you
