Profile

I am Abe or Ibrahim, whichever you prefer. I am a native English speaker who, from the age of nineteen, lived in the Middle East for thirteen years in complete cultural immersion, studying Arabic at the American University in Cairo and then at King Abdul Aziz University in Mecca. At one point I took a break from the Middle East and lived in South America for two years, mastering Spanish and Portuguese, which were easy after Arabic.

I am keen to work on translation and editing projects that fit my skills and background so that I can give you a high-quality translation that sounds as if it were originally in English. I have extensive experience translating religious, academic, and political pieces. I have recently translated a lecture series of a university president from Arabic into English and am also doing substantive and developmental edits to turn that translation into a book. I have also translated a book from Portuguese.

While translation programs may work well between major Western languages, you will know, if you have ever tried to run an Arabic text through the Google translator that what comes out is incomprehensible. So, there are challenges intrinsic to translating between two languages as divergent as Arabic and English, but I am up to the task thanks to my long sojourn in the Arab world and my dedication to mastering Arabic. Spanish and Portuguese are particularly easy for me to translate.

Where I live

I live in Colorado with my wife and 16 year-old son. I travel for about 3 months of the year, usually to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco so that I can refresh my knowledge and use of the three languages I translate from.
