Profile

Hello. My name is Michael.
My native language is English, but I am also fluent in French.
I have a first degree from the University of Reading here in England in French obtained in the summer of 1971 and an MA in Translating and Interpreting from the University of Salford, also in England, awarded to me in the summer of 1996.
In March 1997 I commenced translation of A History of European Literature, mostly to English from French, but also referencing other European languages apart from French. I have to say that passages in Greek, Russian, etc. had facing translations in French in the original work and that the only European languages I have advanced knowledge of other than French are German and Spanish.
This history of European Literature was published by Routledge Taylor Francis in April 2000. Since then I have translated academic papers written in French by a widely travelled, much respected native French Shakepeare scholar mainly with reference of some sort to Shakespeare, e.g. plays like King Lear and The Merchant of Venice. I have also translated the World War I diaries (1916 - 1918) of an Austrian doctor on the Italian front based in Slovenia from handwritten German. His grave is in the Jewish cemetery in Vienna and he died in the flu epidemic that ravaged Europe after the end of World War I.
I like art and literature and have also translated exhibition notes on a Brazilian kinetic artist exhbited in Houston and the website of an Argentinian artist now in Germany.

Where I live

Ashton-under-Lyne, the town where I actually live, is in Greater Manchester east and the nearest big city is Manchester.
Manchester has Central Library in St Peter's Square and is a thriving cosmopolitan place with four universities: the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the University of Salford.
There is a Chinatown with many Chinese restaurants and casinos much frequented by Chinese people.
Not far from Manchester there are opportunities for walking and rambling across moorland scenery, e.g. Greenfield, Marsden, etc.
