Profile

Born and raised in London, I have lived in Swedish Lapland for donkey's years.

Many people in this part of the world, on the Finnish border, prefer to talk Meänkieli, an archaeic Finnish dialect. Even though I have studied Finnish at university level, I find Meänkieli extremely difficult to learn - even more difficult than Finnish.
When I was a language teacher I taught English and French, but people kept giving me things to translate so I started a translation firm and quit teaching.

That was in 1996. I only translate from Swedish to English. I play safe.
In England I went to a grammar school where there was and is a heavy focus on languages, including English. As an expat I have found this useful all my life abroad. To a translator it is essential to have a good command of one's mother tongue and the English grammar teaching we went through at grammar school, which I found pretty boring, nevertheless provided a rock-solid foundation for my English.

I am based in a small community with a small business sector. The community is set in one of the most sparsely populated regions in Europe - less than one person per square kilometre. Translators in that situation have to be good to make it in the business - no walk-in jobs and you never or hardly ever meet the customers since they are so far away.
In the twenty years my company has been in existence I have only once missed a deadline. I had a good excuse, but who wants to hear good excuses?

Where I live

I live in the far north of Sweden, not far from the Laponia World Heritage Area, where there are four large national parks and two large nature reserves.

We have midnight sun for three weeks in June and July and the opposite, midday night for three weeks in December-January. The changeover from one extreme to the other is every bit as dramatic as these two extremes. Apart from the need to adapt to the varying daylight, it makes it difficult for parents with small children to get them into bed in the summer. "You go to bed when it gets dark" becomes meaningless.

We have reindeer on the roads of course, but it's the European elk Alces alces you have to watch out for when driving - at night, through snow dust, at 40 degrees below zero, you tend to be very careful.
