Profile

Hola! I am a senior translator, interpreter, translation manager and editor with over twenty years of experience translating English into Spanish, eight as publishing editor, and five as translation manager. During my childhood in Mexico, I was very fortunate to study with a dedicated British teacher who instilled in me a passion for the English language. At age 11, my family and I moved to the Northern Mexican state of Sonora, which allowed me to keep in permanent contact with the U.S. culture, and to perfect my bilingual skills.

Aside from having worked as a translator now specialized in economic, political, scientific, legal, health, welfare and housing subjects since age 16, I have worked in a wide range of major projects. One of these projects was the translation into Spanish, editing and formatting of legal forms for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, as their Translation Project Editor. Another accomplishment was the production of the book Terror contra el Estado nacional while occupying the position of Assistant Managing Editor for the newspaper Solidaridad de las Américas, and Resumen ejecutivo, an international magazine on Economics, Politics, Science and Technology. And currently I am in charge of translating most of the press releases by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

My love for language and culture led me to the path of teaching. For three years, I became —by “popular demand”— the Spanish teacher for a group of co-workers, leading a weekly class of up to ten students. I also led a study group based on El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, the famous book by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.

Besides language, another of my passions is music. For years I promoted several cultural activities in my native Mexico and performed as solo vocalist in several concerts.

Where I live

I live in Washington, D.C., a metropolitan area that stands out for its broad demographic mix, which reflect an ethnically diverse, cosmopolitan, mid-size capital city. Though the area is a newer gateway than some other communities, now you’ve had several decades of immigrants moving to D.C. It’s a combination of opportunities and chain migration.
Multiethnic families are boosting the regional economy by buying homes, opening businesses and shopping locally. They bring a richness of language, tradition and food that are evident in local shopping centers where African fufu—pounded yams, cassava or plaintains—can be had alongside Salvadoran pupusas—corn or rice tortillas stuffed with cheese, meat and beans—and Vietnamese pho, a noodle soup. Immigrants make up 20% of the population of the D.C. metro area and as they pursue the American dream they face many challenges, not the least of which is language.

That´s why I find the place I live fascinating, and it is also what nurtures my passion for languages as I learn more and more about the subtleties—in my case—of the English and Spanish languages. Living here has given me the opportunity to understand and improve, not only my language skills, but my cultural competency, through my interactions with people from El Salvador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Panama, among other Spanish speaking countries. I am convinced there is no better place in the world to be a translator!
