Profile

Sveiki, I am Ilze,

For the past three years I have been living in the United States and studying biology in the City University of New York. However, before arriving here, I spent two years studying translation in university in Latvia, my home country. Because of my opportunity to live abroad and extensive language learning, I am fluent not only in my native language - Latvian, but also in English.

Previously I have worked as a freelance translator on different projects. Some were medicine-related, scientific, legal, and some very technical manuals. For the past year I have been doing volunteer translations for the families in the U.S that host orphans from Latvia.

In addition to my translation experience, during my studies in the university in Latvia, I also worked as an English teacher to adults (from complete beginners to advanced levels).

Translation has always been my first and foremost interest, however, while studying it in Latvia, I realized that knowing the art of both source and target languages isn't enough in order to become a fully competent translator. The knowledge of the subject and different cultures is as important. Therefore I decided to focus on my second biggest passion - science. And my being here, in the cultural melting pot - New York City, has been a great opportunity to also become familiar with so many different cultures.

I would love to share my knowledge and experience by providing you with the best quality translations from English to Latvian and vice versa, always within the previously agreed deadlines.

I look forward to a wonderful and successful collaboration with Say Hello team.

Where I live

Originally from Kuldiga, a small UNESCO heritage protected town in western Latvia, I currently live in the suburbs of New York City.

In Kuldiga I lived for 19 years and have hosted many tourists from all over the world, including United States, different European countries, Vietnam and Thailand. All of them come to this tiny town with a population no more than 10,000 for the same reason - it has the widest waterfall in Europe, one of the longest and oldest brick bridges in Europe that was destroyed during World War I and then restored, and almost 800 years old architecture.

It is a very charming and romantic town, sometimes being called the Little Venice, because of the little river Alekšupīte that runs through the old town. In summer nights the open-air movie theater is free to everyone and shows films mostly made in Latvia, but sometimes also award-winning movies from all over the world.

Quite the opposite is New York City, the Big Apple. With its world famous tourism objects (such as Rockefeller center, Empire State building, Brooklyn Bridge and Flat Iron building) as well as wild nightlife, the city that never sleeps is well-known to more or less everyone. The only way to really understand New York is to actually come here and experience it yourself. No guide books or videos can give the same feeling of the size or culture of the city.
