Profile

Francisco was born in Rio de Janeiro where he lives to this day. He translates using the names Francisco Manhães, Francisco César Manhães Monteiro and Paco Manhães. He graduated in Portuguese/Spanish from UERJ, where, in 1996, he also took his Master’s degree in the same field with a dissertation entitled A tradução como poética da leitura, under the supervision of Jorge Wanderley.

Francisco has worked as a translator, proof-reader and copywriter since 1991 and has taught at the following universities: Universidade Veiga de Almeida, Fundação Técnico Educacional Souza Marques, Universidade Castelo Branco, Universidade Estácio de Sá, Universidade Gama Filho and Universidade da Cidade.

He began translating in 1990 at UERJ, where a group of professors and students organized by Carlos Lima worked together on translations of Hispanic American poets into Portuguese and of Brazilian poets into Spanish. This group created translations and versions of the work of 170 poets that are yet to be published. In the same period, he took part in the Mario Faustino poetry workshop – also organized and lead by Carlos Lima – where he practiced his translation skills under the supervision of Jorge Wanderley. Soon after, together with Darío Henao Restrepo and César Guilmar he took part in the Leviatã study group on grammar, literature and translation. He translated works by Nicolás Guillén and Alvaro Mutis, and a separate book of poetry by Miguel Hernández. As well as literature he translates academic texts, particularly in the fields of Social Sciences, History and Law.
