Profile

Baska Translations is a woman-owned company that specializes in English to Spanish healthcare-related translation and interpretation. The company is run by Dr. Victoria Bañales, an ATA-certified translator, and provides hassle-free, high-quality translation services to clients in the biomedical, clinical trials, healthcare, medical device, and pharmaceutical fields, among others. Victoria has close to 30 years of translation experience, over 5 of them specifically in the medical translation field.

Victoria grew up speaking Spanish in the Basque Country, where she started learning German at only 5 years old when she entered the Deutsche Schule Bilbao. At age 10, she began learning English and excelled at languages. She completed a BA in English Philology at the Universidad de Deusto, graduating as one of the top three students in her class. She was then accepted to a Master's program in Comparative Literature at Purdue University, where she graduated with honors. Her first job was in Zurich, Switzerland, where she worked for 5 years before moving to Japan. Here, Victoria studied Japanese and passed Level N1 of the JLPT (日本語能力試験).

In the year 2000, Victoria returned to the United States, earned another Master's degree and a PhD in Comparative Literature, and worked in higher education & event management, before becoming a full-time in-house translator in 2012 for an organization that writes medical content while building her own translation business.

Where I live

I'm Basque. I was born and raised in Bilbao, on the Spanish side of the Basque Country, which is a very beautiful and unique area of the world. I was lucky to attend a German school from Kindergarden until high school graduation, where I had an early taste of language and cultural diversity, and also learned German and English.

I've lived and worked in the German-speaking area of Switzerland (Zurich, Baden, Brugg) and also in Japan (Mito City), as well as various states in the USA. I currently live and work in Boise, Idaho, which is a small jewel of a town. I enjoy doing a lot of outdoor activities, such as alpine and nordic skiing, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, SUP, and much more.
